Table 2 shows how the discs are partitioned, the approximate size of each partition, and where

on the filesystem they are mounted. All the discs use the Linux (type 0x83) format, except for

those configured to be Physical Volumes for use by the Logical Volume Manager (LVM) – these

use the Linux LVM (type 0x8e) format.

Currently, only hde2 and hdf1 are setup to be part of a Logical Volume. Logical Volumes are

large virtual partitions made up of several smaller disc partitions. The logical volume

/dev/vg_data/flight contains all the XMM flight data we receive. As the amount of data

increases beyond the capacity of the logical volume, extra discs can be added to the volume to

increase its size without having to resort to hack such as multiple partitions with softlinks

unifying the file structure. The vg_data volume can be extended to a maximum size of 2TB.
