Now the data needs to be unpacked into /xmm/archive/flight/orbits with the softlinks in

/xmm/current/flight/calev/orbits. I’ve written a tool which does all this in one go, called

obs_unpack.

obs_unpack is a Perl script installed in /usr/local/bin. It expects to be passed files which are

either tarfiles or tarballs (gzipped tarfiles) in the standard Vilspa XMM packaging format.

obs_unpack is set to run as root even if the user running it does not have root permissions.

This is achieved by ensuring that the obs_unpack executable is owned by root and has its

sticky permission bits set.

Calibration data needs to be owned by the xra group. The –x switch to obs_unpack ensures

this.

Once obs_unpack has finished, you will need to delete the files you have downloaded.

The full URL for cal closed data can be summarised as

Orbit-per-week data

The procedure for orbit-per-week data is almost the same as that for calibration data. Every

few weeks (and not every week as you might expect), I receive email notification from Michael

Smith ([email protected]

) that a complete set of data for a particular orbit or orbits

are available for download. We tend to get every fifth revolution’s worth.

An orbit-per-week download and unpacking session is shown below. Note that although the

data is retrieved from the same FTP server as calibration data, the user account is different.
